Tips for buying Safety Eyewear Parts

  1. For every laser used in the facility, the laser safety officer should select the right eye protection and determine the NHZ for each.
  2. Wearing vision-correcting eyeglasses alone does not protect against most laser wavelengths.
  3. Comfortable, size-adjustable eyewear can reduce fatigue.
  4. Side and brow coverage is another preferred feature.
  5. There are several types of laser safety eyewear. Before purchasing, facilities should consider the following: the amount of peripheral protection desired, the field of vision, the user's face and head shape, and whether the user is wearing vision-correcting spectacles.
  6. Buyers should also consider the lenses' effect on color vision.
  7. Peripheral protection is also a vital concern, though frontal protection is most important.
  8. Buyers should consider eyewear that does not unduly restrict field of vision; however, increased field of vision is obtained in most eyewear by sacrificing peripheral protection.
  9. The best peripheral protection is offered by goggles, but it's provided at the cost of field of vision and comfort.
  10. A better option is spectacles with side shields and wraps. These provide adequate peripheral protection with little loss of field of vision and comfort.
  11. For each procedure, the required OD must be calculated according to the formulas in the ANSI Z136.1 and Z136.3 standards. These standards also require the manufacturer to label both the OD and the wavelength on all laser eyewear.
  12. Users of multi-wavelength eye protection must be made aware of the OD for each wavelength that it filters.
  13. Computer programs can help with OD calculations, and some manufacturers also offer calculation services.
