Tips for buying C-Arm Parts
C-Arms are an integral part of every large hospital’s system. They are widely used in orthopedic surgeries and vascular procedures such as: angiography, pain management and cardiac catheterization. C-Arms are primarily classified as either fixed, dedicated vascular/cardiac systems or multipurpose mobile C-Arm systems. C-Arms, as the name suggests, consists of a C-shaped metal mount equipped with an x-ray source at one end and an image acquisition system at the other end of the C. The patient, on the table, is placed between the x-ray source and the image acquisition system. During the procedure, the x-ray source is switched on and the images obtained are used to either guide the surgical instrument or diagnose a pathological condition. Traditionally, the image acquisition device of choice for mobile C-Arms has been the image intensifier tube with an attached camera.Between fixed C-Arm systems and the mobile C-Arm systems, the latter is more common and costs a fraction of the former. This is due to the fact that the fixed systems are used for more complex procedures and are therefore equipped with a far greater number of features. However, most mobile C-Arms are today available in high-end versions which are capable of performing vascular and cardiac procedures, as well. The distinct advantage that the mobile system offers is its ability to go where the patient is, and not have to bring the patient to the equipment.
When purchasing mobile C-arm parts, it is important to take into consideration the following:
- The unique "C" is the special arched semi-circular arm which carries both the x-ray source and the detecting device mobile C-Arm parts.
- When choosing a mobile C-Arm, the technology of the system should be of prime consideration:
- Most existing mobile C-Arm units incorporate image intensifiers as the image acquisition component (a mobile C-Arm part).
- However, some on newer models a flat panel detector replaces the image intensifier (a mobile C-Arm part).
- A flat panel detector mobile C-Arm part, is much more suitable for integration in modern digital image systems. The flat panel detector, is smaller than the image intensifier, leaving more free space around the patient.
- The size of the field of view is a very important matter. The necessary area of the image acquisition device should be determined in accordance with the intended usage of the system.
- The power of the generator will determine the x-ray penetration capability and the basic quality of the acquired image with higher x-ray power diagnostic capability of the image system improved.
- The acquisition speed of the digital image system mobile C-Arm part, should be considered. The size of the data storage and the data processing power should be able to perform all the necessary tasks, according to the planned applications.
- After all the necessary C-arm applications and programs are installed and smoothly running, it is highly recommended to look thoroughly into the applications and check them for proper function.
- The control system is a very important mobile C-Arm part, and should be simple and intuitively operated. A well-designed control system will enhance the usability of the machine.
- The total mobile C-arm system should be movable. As such, the inter-connecting cables should be easy to unplug during the time in which the equipment is moved.
- When buying used mobile C-arm equipment, it is important to check its external condition, the status of the x-ray tube and the status of the image intensifier.
- Sometimes the patient bed is supplied with the system as another mobile C-Arm part. The bed should be mobile, stable and adjustable.
- There are special mobile C-Arm systems for the imaging of extremities. These systems feature a very small C-Arm, low power x-ray tube and small field of view. Also, all the rest of the mobile C-Arm parts of such systems are small and lightweight.
