Tips for buying CT Scanner Parts
The CT scanner encompasses a system of assembled CT Parts which perform cross-sectional images. The CT parts are very unique in the imaging world and as such, offer new diagnostic x-ray methodologies. In the conventional x-ray, structures overlay each other in the resulting image and may be hard to differentiate from each other. However, with the CT scanner, which is an assembly of complex, integrated CT parts, the x-rays are utilized in a different geometric and data acquisition arrangement resulting in cross-sectional image results, permitting the differentiation of overlapping structures.
CT scanner technology has advanced rapidly in recent years due to the revolutionary development of the system’s CT parts. The most remarkable and perhaps most important CT part is the detector system. This CT part is currently optimized to perform fast, simultaneous multi-slice scans.
The CT scanner is basically a circular rotating frame referred to as a Gantry CT Part with a special x-ray tube CT part mounted on one side and a banana-shaped detector referred to as a Banana CT part is mounted on the other.
A fan-shaped beam of x-rays is created, as the rotating frame spins, as the rotating frame spins the x-ray tube and detector around the patient. For each complete rotation, one cross-sectional slice of the body is acquired. As the scanner rotates, the detector takes numerous snapshots. Typically, about 1000 snapshots are taken in one rotation. Each snapshot is analyzed by computer and the full set of snapshots from each rotation is integrated to form the slice, which is a two-dimensional image.
To fully understand how all CT parts harmoniously work together, it is necessary to present the main CT parts one by one in detail:
1. The Gantry is the largest of all of the CT parts. It is the rotating frame, which rotates at a speed of 100 – 200 RPM. A heavy x-ray tube CT part is mounted on it, as well as the banana detector arch and other associated CT parts. Electric power, preconditioning lines and signal lines are provided by slipping rings. In the newer models, the signals are transmitted by a wireless system.
2. The next CT parts in line of importance are the x-ray tube and the banana detector arch. The tube is a heavy –duty, high- power device which produces a powerful x-ray fan- shaped beam. The heavy weight of this particular CT part is one of the mechanical limiting factors in using higher speeds of gantry rotation. The Ct part tube is cooled by a cooling system which is also a special CT part, particular to this type of imaging system.
3. The banana is another unique CT part. It is made up of many solid state discrete detectors. In older models, gas- filled discharge detectors were used. The number of slices, the pitch, width and the resolution depend on its design.
4. The next CT part to take into consideration is the computer system. The computer system processes and interprets the acquired data and creates images. The images can be displayed on yet another CT part, the local working station, or stored for later display and interpretation on a remote working station or a computer which is not a CT part, so is separate from the CT system.
5. The last mentioned, but still highly significant CT part is the CT scanner table. While CT images are being taken, the table moves slowly and the patient is scanned over the entire area of examination.
Behind the main CT parts, stand several supporting CT parts: the high-power generator that feeds the x-ray tube, the cooling system of the tube and the highly sophisticated control system.
CT Scanners, built from these important CT parts, can be used in diagnosis, to assess the effectiveness of treatment and to guide or plan clinical intervention.
