Item Description
CARDIOMEDICS - CardiAssist ECP Unit
Condition: Good, ECP External Counterpulsation. The CardiAssist ECP System is a non-invasive, circulatory assist device that provides external counterpulsation for the treatment of ischemic heart disease (angina). The therapy does not require any type of anesthesia. The system improves cardiac function by enhancing perfusion of the coronary vasculature, using a mechanism similar to the intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP). The Company's CardiAssist System conists of a portable control console, containing pumps and valves, and reusable fabric cuffs, containing inflatable, plastic bladders, which are fastened with Velcro about the patient's calves, thighs and the buttocks.
The cuffs are sequentially inflated (first the calves, next the thighs, and finally the buttocks), during diastole (when the heart is momentarily at rest between beats), synchronized with the patient's electrocardiogram or ECG. Compression of the cuffs during diastole forces blood from the legs and buttocks up to the heart, reducing the work effort of the heart and increasing the flow of blood through the coronary arteries to the heart muscle.
Patients are screened by their physician who should exercise his/her medical judgement when applying the CardiAssist ECP System to patients with:
- Severe peripheral vascular disease/plebitis - Aortic valve insufficiency where regurgitation would prevent diastolic augmentation - Aneurysms - Arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, ventricular tachycardia
- Atrial pacemakers - Bleeding diathesis (Coumadin therapy with PT greater than or equal to 15) - Severe hypertension (greater than or equal to 180/110mmHg) - Cardiac catheterization within 1-2 weeks - Cardiac Surgery within 3 months - Pregnancy.
