Research has now proven that the severe complications of diabetes can be avoided if proper blood glucose levels are maintained. The person with diabetes needs to check blood sugars several times a day in order to know if they are following a regime which is right for them and in fact does keep those blood sugars in control. Lab tests such as the Hemoglobin A1c allow the doctor and patient to know if those daily control measures are in fact enough to lower the risks of complications. Adjustments to insulin, exercise, etc. can be made immediately.
