- The implantable defibrillator/pacemaker should have cardio version, defibrillation, and bradycardia pacing therapies; antitachycardia pacing is an option depending on user requirements.
- The unit should be able to provide at least 30 joules the minimum of five separate shocks. A biphasic waveform is preferred. For bradycardia pacing, the rate should be 30-100 pulses per minute, and the sensitivity should be 0.5 to 5 mV - atrial and 0.5 to 7.5 mV ventricular.
- The unit should be able to store and transmit at least 15 events via telemetry, including: intracardiac electrogram and last shock impedance. The minimum life expectancy of the battery should be five years.
- Many types and levels of ICD are available for implementation by facilities. The physician based on the patient's illness should make the selection through a process in which cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, and electro physiologists will all be included for better assessment of the specific needs of the facility.
- The lead system needs to be approved for use with the pulse generator.
