1. Modern diagnostic ultrasonography uses probes containing an acoustic ultrasound transducer (or several transducers) to send pulses of ultrasound into matter. Whenever the mechanical wave encounters a border between two different materials (different acoustic impedance) some energy is reflected back to the ultrasound transducer.
